California 3-day notice? Send it Certified.

Direct answer: Your tenant is sent the follow-up copy of your 3-day notice to pay rent or quit, and we print and mail it Certified once you approve. Code of Civil Procedure section 1162 pairs that copy with leaving one with an adult or posting it; your attorney can confirm the method. USPS delivery times vary.

What is a California 3-day notice to pay or quit?

It is the written notice a landlord serves when rent is unpaid. CCP 1161, subdivision 2, describes "three days' notice, excluding Saturdays and Sundays and other judicial holidays, in writing, requiring its payment, stating the amount that is due, the name, telephone number, and address of the person to whom the rent payment shall be made." Subdivision 2 also says "The notice may be served at any time within one year after the rent becomes due." This page covers the notice and its mailed copy. What comes after the notice period is on California eviction notice? Notify tenants before filing.

Must a California 3-day notice go certified?

No class of mail is named. CCP 1162(a) lists personal delivery; leaving a copy "with some person of suitable age and discretion" and "sending a copy through the mail"; or "affixing a copy in a conspicuous place on the property" and "also sending a copy through the mail." Mail is never the only step. Three days is shorter than USPS First-Class Mail's 1-5 business days (USPS), so the mailed copy follows the hand or posted copy, and you send it the same day you can.

What goes on the notice?

Section 1161 subdivision 2 asks for the amount due and the name, telephone number and address of the person to pay, plus the usual days and hours if rent can be paid in person, or a bank account or an electronic funds transfer option. Subdivision 6 says "A landlord or its agent shall not charge a tenant a fee for serving, posting, or otherwise delivering any notice." Your attorney or the court's self-help center can check your form.

How do you mail the copy with USMail.ai?

You upload. You approve. We produce. Upload the same notice you served or posted, type the tenant's address, pick Certified Mail or First-Class, check the proof and the full price, and approve. We print, envelope and hand it to USPS. From our own production floor: we print, envelope and hand each piece to USPS, and you see the proof and the full price before you approve. Every address comes from you. We check every address before mailing, and the AI never suggests or adds one. If plans change, you can unapprove an approved job before its mail date, and the money goes back on your meter balance, not your card.

Certified Mail is $1.15 plus the current USPS Certified Mail fee, which USPS publishes in Notice 123. You see the full price before you approve. We don't offer paper Return Receipt yet. Letters starting at $1.15, postage included. For a one-page, single-sided, black-and-white First-Class letter. USMail.ai is an AI print-to-mail platform, not USPS.

What should you keep for your records?

Keep a copy of the notice exactly as you approved it, the date you approved the job, and the mail date. If you chose Certified Mail, save the USPS tracking events as they post. Those records show what you sent and when it went to USPS. They don't prove what the tenant received, and we don't promise how a court will treat them. If you send the same notice to more than one adult on the lease, give each person their own letter with their own name and address, so every record matches one person. Your attorney or your court's self-help center can tell you what to bring if the case goes forward.

Is a 3-day notice the same as the eviction case?

No. The 3-day notice comes first and gives the tenant a chance to pay or move. The court case, called unlawful detainer, comes only after the notice period ends. That later stretch, and what to have ready before you file, is on the California eviction notice page linked above. Keep the two steps separate in your records.
